South Central Austin contain homes that were primarily built from the 1930’s up to the late 1970s. There are four neighborhoods that border downtown Austin and Lady Bird Lake, those being Travis Heights, Bouldin, Zilker and Barton Hills. The primary boundaries to the South Central Austin area are Lady Bird Lake, I-35, Ben White Blvd and Loop 1.
South Austin is known for its more laid back residents and communities. At one point known as Bubba Land, as it was primarily blue collar workers who resided in the area. It was also a haven for artists and musicians, with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan residing in South Austin, which is why his statue on Auditorium Shores looks to South Austin.
South Central Austin has three primary north/south thorough fares, South Congress, South First Street and South Lamar. These three street are now very popular because of the large number of independent businesses, restaurants and night clubs that have sprung up within the last 10-15 years.
